Avery and Connor are both playing NJB hoops again this season. 5th and 6th grade league. I'm coaching Avery's team - got strong armed into coaching from Brian Lucieweiz (Connor's coach the first couple years). He said "you owe it to your daughter and your country..." then "did I guilt you into it yet?" LOL
Avery is the best big player on her team. Also have Maria and Katie on her team. Have a couple of decent point guards (Carolina and Alexis) and Allison from the all star team last year. Rough year in terms of wins (we just won our 3rd today to get to 3-5), but all the girls have great attitudes about it - just having fun.
Avery is becoming more dominant. Just now feeling comfortable making a fake and driving the lane for a layup. In today's game she probably had 10 points just off bank shots from close in, some after a rebound.
Connor's playing for a local dad named Rob Ackles, who has triplets (2 boys on the team). Super nice guy but they dont have much talent on the team. A few games ago Rob put In N Out on the line for when they win their first game. The 2nd game after he did that - they won. Just my luck, I was traveling for work to DC the day of the game. Connor had a great game - double double (points and rebounds) to earn the "double double" (in n out).
Today they continued their great play, Connor had another great game - driving the lane a few times, getting found, making free throws. Another double double. 11 points, 16 rebounds.
Both Avery and Connor have been nominated to the all star tryout this season. This year they're holding a tryout with more than the number of players they need. They'll choose the teams from there.
2 more games to end the regular season, then a post season tournament, then all stars (hopefully).
Don't know who's coaching all stars -- just glad that Brian didn't ask me. I'm not cut out for this coaching stuff. I struggle with how to treat the girls that just aren't that into hoops, don't practice, don't know the plays, etc. Can I yell at them? Make them run? Give them homework?
